    ERASMUS – EEI

    The Erasmus Program

The ERASMUS program was launched by the EU Commission in 1987 to promote the mobility of students and lecturers within Europe. It is still a successful program today. The program owes its name to the philosopher, theologian and humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam (1465-1536), a tireless fighter against dogmatism in all areas of human life.

ERASMUS+, the new EU program for education, training, youth and sport, was launched on 1 January 2014. “Erasmus+” serves to promote general cooperation in the field of education and student and staff mobility in Europe. It offers students the opportunity to gain experience in other European countries, to get to know the language and culture and to take advantage of the courses on offer there. Students from a wide range of institutes can spend three to twelve months studying abroad (i.e. attending courses and taking exams) as well as completing practical placements for laboratory or industrial work placements or writing their theses or dissertations. During this time, depending on the host country, you will receive approximately 240 – 360 euros per month and be exempt from any tuition fees at the host university.

    Erasmus+ for FAU Students

The prerequisites for participation are enrollment at FAU with the aim of obtaining a university degree (including a doctorate!) for the entire duration of the study abroad, completion of the first year of study at the start of the stay abroad (i.e. participation from the 3rd university semester) and sufficient knowledge of the language of the target country or the language of instruction there. For WING students, the partnerships of the Department of Economics in Nuremberg are also available.

General information on Erasmus+ can be found on the website of the RIA (Department of International Affairs): Erasmus+ Studium

You can find an overview of current information events on the subject of “Pathways abroad” here: Informative Meetings

Information on internships abroad and funding opportunities can also be found on the website of the RIA (Department of International Affairs): Internships and Placements Abroad

Tipps zur Vorbereitung: sprachlich und interkulturell

There are various opportunities at FAU to prepare yourself linguistically and interculturally for your upcoming stay abroad. Here is a small selection of the possibilities:

    • Language courses at our language center: https://sz.fau.de/sprachkurse/
    • Acquisition of intercultural skills as key qualifications, e.g. via the certificate program “Intercultural Competence for Students”: https://www.ziwis.fau.de/zertifikat-interkulturelle-kompetenz-fuer-studierende-zertifikationsprogamm/
    • Participation in FAU’s Buddy program: https://www.fau.de/education/international/aus-dem-ausland-an-die-fau/willkommensangebote-fuer-internationale-studierende/buddy-programm/

Turkey Bilkent Ankara 2x WS, 2x SS
Latvia Riga RTU 2x WS, 2x SS
Jordan Irbid JUST 2x WS o. SS

The application procedure is the same as below. These places are allocated according to the order in which the application is received, provided that all the requirements listed below are met. Important: The application must be submitted at least 2-3 weeks before the application deadline of the respective university for the desired semester.

    Application Procedure

In the following list you will find an overview of our partner universities from which you can select your preferred university. As the number of study places is limited, we recommend that you also specify an alternative. The page of the Department of International Affairs with student experience reports is helpful (click on “Experience reports” at the top of the bar, then select the country and university).
If the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, the places will be allocated to the students according to the criteria described in the “Nomination” section.
When choosing your preferred university, please bear in mind that the lecture periods usually differ considerably, especially in the summer semester. This requires some planning in advance, as examinations are usually missed in the winter semester, but these can often be catched up after returning to FAU in the summer semester in consultation with the Examinations Office (even if a semester of leave is taken).

The EEI department has the following partnerships:

Please note: Full-year stays (10 months) are only possible if there are no further applications for the second semester.

(*1) recommended, in some cases mandatory (e.g. Valencia). Proof is often required, but there is usually no need to take a commercial test. A mobility test at the Language Center is recommended. When applying, you should provide evidence that you have achieved this (test result, good Abitur grade, completed language courses, etc.).
(*2) Bachelor’s courses are mostly in Finnish, only Master’s courses are taught entirely in English.
(*3) Nomination only takes place with proof of Spanish language skills, but B2 does not have to be achieved as it is only recommended by the university. Achieving A2 by the start of the stay abroad is considered sufficient, at least Abitur Spanish or a language course is expected as proof when applying.

(*4) Admission requirement: No failed examinations in the transcript of records.

(*5) Spanish A2 and English B2 are required for English-language courses, Spanish B2 for Spanish-language courses. There are currently practically only a sufficient number of Spanish-language courses. Please note the following information before applying for Valencia: https://instudentetsit.blogs.upv.es.

Applications for a stay abroad in WS25/26 and/or SS26 should be sent by e-mail to eei-erasmus@fau.de by 15.01.2025 at the latest.

Please send the following documents summarized as one (1) PDF file with max. 4 MB to the above e-mail address:

    • Cover letter with information on:
Who – when – where (with max. one alternative) – why?
      Which subject/field of study?
Which study goals abroad (qualitative): Elective modules – specialization modules?
Length: Max. 1 page DIN A4! Please do not write a flowery letter of motivation.
Note: An application can be made for the WS, SS, WS+SS (full year) or WS/SS (flexible). A nomination for a full year will only be made if there are no further applications for the second semester. If this is not possible, a request will be made in which a choice must be made between WS and SS. This is similar for WS/SS (flexible). WS+SS or WS/SS increase the chances of an application.
    • Non-binding list of intended courses at the desired university / alternative (total ECTS credits: 20-25 as a guideline)
Note: The focus should be on EEI subjects or other subjects at the EEI Department (often also language courses, project management, etc.). Students are expected to be willing to limit themselves to EEI subjects if required by the partner university.
    • Complete contact details: Study/current address, home address, e-mail, telephone, matriculation number
    • Curriculum vitae, in tabular form, short, max. 2 pages
    • High school diploma / Abitur (single copy)
    • Bachelor students: Excerpt from My Campus with GOP grade and current transcript of records
    • Master students: Bachelor’s degree certificate, transcript of records for Master’s degree program (excerpt from My Campus)
    • Current certificate of enrollment
    • Proof of language proficiency in the host country and the language of instruction in the host country (UniCERT, language center certificates, etc.)
    • Completed Excel spreadsheet (in this form, please not as a PDF!) with your most important data and personalized file name

If you have any questions, please contact the ERASMUS coordinator at the EEI:

    Dr.-Ing. Christian Carlowitz
    Lehrstuhl für Hochfrequenztechnik
    Cauerstraße 9, Raum 05.235
    91058 Erlangen
    Tel.: 09131 / 8520772
    Fax: 09131 / 8527212
    E-Mail: eei-erasmus@fau.de

After reviewing all application documents, the ERASMUS Coordinator of the EEI informs the applicants about the result (notification usually takes place 2-4 weeks after the deadline) and sends a nomination list to the Department of International Affairs.

The criteria for ranking the applications are as follows:

    1. Examination of the prerequisites (exclusion criterion), including
      • Willingness to study subjects in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, information technology (foreign subjects are possible to a limited extent if the partner university permits this). Applications for other courses must be rejected as this is not covered by our contracts.
      • Degree program: all degree programs with an EEI component are equally eligible, see overview of the departments degree programs, additionally MAOT is equally eligible; other degree programs are given lower priority if there is interest in EEI subjects
      • Minimum language requirements (see table below)
      • Bachelor’s/Master’s enrollment (see table below), some universities only admit Bachelor’s or Master’s students. Bachelor students in their 7th Bachelor semester can usually apply and enroll as Master students.
    2. Ranking of applications according to Bachelor’s grade, in case of equality additional consideration of Master’s grade (if available)
    3. If there is still a tie between applications, the following additional criteria will be taken into account: voluntary work, knowledge of the national language, content of the letter of motivation, progress in studies, Abitur grade

The RIA is the central international office of the university, which is responsible for the administrative process of the ERASMUS program and the payment of the study grant. After the successful nomination, this office is also an important contact for you, who will inform you about the further formalities. The RIA sends an e-mail to all nominated students asking them to register in the RIA online system. Furthermore, the RIA informs the host university about the nominated students and the students about the registration modalities of the host university.

After the RIA has informed you, you must now register with the foreign university yourself. It is very important that you adhere to the respective registration deadlines, otherwise no exchange place can be guaranteed!

The Learning Agreement will be confirmed by Dr. Carlowitz. Please discuss the possibilities of subsequent recognition with the Recognition Officer, Ms. Churavy, in advance. She will then send a corresponding confirmation to Mr. Carlowitz. After your return, please fill out an application for recognition (https://www.eei.studium.fau.de/anerkennung) and send it together with your transcript of records and your Learning Agreement by e-mail to Ms. Churavy.
